Speda Hazim is an award nominated documentary filmmaker from Kurdistan, Iraq producing, editing, and directing films across the region for a wide range of international media outlets.

Through her films, Speda is spotting the light on sensitive topics in her community and the ME through character led stories. She recently shot and directed “no choice but to leave”, a film about the impact of droughts on livelihood in Garmyan area, Kurdistan.

As a producer, Speda’s credits include in films for VICE news: Social Media Star Exorcist in Iraq, a film about faith healers and the stigma of mental health in Iraq. Inside Iraqi Kurdistan’s Bloody Dogfighting Scene, Kurdish dogfighters, and their reliance on social media. Alongside two other films for BBC our world; Yazidi Women: Clearing Sinjar’s Mines, following a young Yazidi woman who escaped ISIS captivity and is now working as a de-miner in Sinjar. Lebanon on Life Support: Lebanon’s economic collapse, showing the crisis through the lens of the Rafik Hariri University Hospital and its struggles with shortages of resources and medications.

Alongside producing a local documentary series Deng that was focused on the progress in the Kurdish community, and many other short films published on different social media planforms.

Speda holds a BA degree in Politics and International Relations from University of Kurdistan- Hawler.
